Two summers ago I was looking for a job while I was not taking classes. I had previously worked for Dicks Sporting Goods, however, I wanted a job that had a more reliable schedule and one that I knew I could work at least 40 hours a week instead of 30-35 hours. I really wanted to start saving a lot of money and I knew that the best way to find a well-paying job was by looking at the hourly wages being offered by each company. I ended up choosing to work at a distribution center for Amazon. They offered hourly rates almost $5 higher than any other entry-level job available at the time. However, there was a tradeoff because I would have to work graveyard shifts which means my schedule was from 1:00 am to around 11:30 am Mondays through Thursdays. Although this was tough the compensation really drove my decision to apply and I ended up working there for 4 months. I think compensation was such a big motivator for me because, bottom line, I wanted to make as much money as possible in those few months to be able to invest and keep in my savings. If I did not receive that high of pay I don’t think I would have been able to work through the 10-hour graveyard shifts that consisted of heavy lifting and walking 25,000+ steps a day. Essentially, the fact that Amazon was the only company I could find offering to pay that much is the reason why I took the job.
