Blog Post #2

This blog post will cover the technology the Team decided to use for the project, why we chose this technology, the alternatives and the pros of cons.

The technology the team voted on to use for our Augmented Reality take on the classic arcade game “Galaga” is Unity. Unity is a cross-platform game engine which will give us all the tools to build our game.

Deciding on the technology for our project was heavily debated as there are strong alternatives in this arena. The main alternative to Unity is Unreal 5, which is also a cross-platform game engine. We put a lot of thought into choosing Unity over Unreal by weighing the pros and cons of each engine.

Some of the pros for Unreal was that is is an industry standard and is currently being used more than Unity at the professional level. Another pro is it seems to have an edge on Unity in terms of 3D assets creation. The main cons for Unreal is it has a steep learning curve and requires using C++. Some cons for Unity are the asset library is limited and not as manicured in terms of some assets in the library might not work. Another con is it is not as stable as Unreal and is not as efficient with resources when working and deploying. The reason Unity was ultimately chosen over Unreal was the pros of this engine outweighed the cons. Unity has a better ease of entry for beginners, designed for mobile (which we will need for AR) and it’s native language is C#, which the team has more experience with.
