So what do the best companies to work for do to make that happen? Let’s find out by looking at three very different companies that have the same goal: to retain top talent.
The Hilton – The hotel company The Hilton is the number one company to work for, according to The Fortune 100 Best Companies to Work For in 2020. So what do their employees say makes it the best place to work? They appreciate and take care of their employees, and their employees state they “love how I don’t feel like just a number here,” at the Hilton, but rather like family (Fortune, 2020.)
Wegman’s Food Market – Named the number 3 best place to work, the food store company, an entirely different market than The Hilton’s hotel market, had similar praises from their staff, who say “I have always been made to feel wanted and valued as a person and employee.” (Fortune, 2020) Are we seeing a pattern?
Kimley-Horn – Kimley-Horn engineering firm, a separate market from Hilton’s Hotel firm and Wegman’s Food market, has a similar experience from their staff, who say they “have incredible opportunities, amazing benefits and flexible work schedule.” (Forbes, 2020) Despite the difference in markets, Kimley-Horn engineering firm employees have the same experience – they feel like a real person, not just an employee.
The bottom line – for these companies, it isn’t about their product, their market, or their company. It’s about the employees. Their feelings, their work life, balance, and their value as a person. This may be the most difficult, but most important role of an HR Management role.
