This course has taught me

This was by far one of the toughest courses I have taken in college, but I made it through. Some days were so frustrating trying to figure out how to navigate through the technology. I did learn a lot from this class and I’am satisfied with my grade because I worked hard for it. Before taking this course I didn’t know much about technology and using computers other than the internet and word documents. From this class I learned the struggles women in the S.T.E.M. field continue to experience all the time. I realized how much society relies on technology in their everyday life. I learned how to make a blog, edit it, add images, add hyperlinks. Getting through this course was tough, but I’m proud of myself I did. Thank you for this term have a great summer.

week 9 coming to an end

I think companies should work more on helping washing machines to not affect the environment so much in a negative way. They should still be meant to help us but at the same time shouldn’t effect the environment so much as far as energy and water supply. The hardest part of the project was finding the proper research, but it ended up working out. Right now washing machines are always in demand so the marketing and sales aspect of it is booming. My greatest dreams in life would be to travel the world for one whole year. Make a difference in someone or some family less fortunate than me life. I hope to one day become a pediatric nurse and own my own clinic and make a difference in children’s life.

so far

So far from my research I have learned a lot about the history of the washing machine. I have had trouble finding different sections of the research that is required. In the next week for my final project I hope to find more research on the timeline and social factors of washing machines. This project has consumed a lot of time but yet still missing major sections, it has been frustrating I do hope to fill in the blanks in the next week.

Washing Machine

I chose to research the washing machine how it originated and how it has developed over time. One thing that led me to choose this for my topic is the fact that from the time I was little until now washing machines have developed so much. I feel like it is an appliance that has kept up with society and their needs since it was first introduced. Unlike my first project I have found some good sources especially on the history of the washing machine. I think this project will be easier for me in the sense of finding research because that is what I struggled with on the first project.

My success..

I had trouble with uploading the media I used in my paper, but eventually I figured it out. Overall the project was a lot of work but it feels great to finally get it done. Other than the intense research I enjoyed this project.I especially liked the person I picked Erna was a very inspirational woman I loved that about her. I’m starting to catch on to the blog and figuring out how things work even if I need to re read the directions a few times.

As a child I was raised as the oldest of five children so we always had to share our toys. Growing up we had more legos than one could imagine. I enjoyed building legos and trying to form figures and shapes. I was very particular about what color legos I used I preferred girl colors like pink and purple.

How is it going so far..

This week was by far the toughest when it came to the project it was frustrating not being able to find more research on the specifics of Erna Hoover’s invention. It made it hard to meet the requirements of the paper, before the final paper is due I plan on digging deeper to really find in depth what Hoover’s invention it is and what she used to create it. On top of the paper the blog instructions were so confusing to me this week. I hope over the next week I can figure everything out and do well on my first project for the class.

My research this week

I chatted with the librarians on answerland 24/7 I found it to be the most effective way to get a response in a fast and timely manner. The librarian helped me navigate through the databases I found with the lady I’m researching on I had to be more specific in my search especially with her having such a popular last name.  That was the only trouble I ran into when searching for her other people coming up with the same last name. I found google scholar was a good place to start my research it gave a lot of insight and background on Ms. Hoover.

Hedy Lamarr, more than just a pretty face

Hedy Lamarr became known as a Austrian actress in the 1920’s but proved to be more than just a pretty face. She was an Austrian born and raised in Vienna, Austria-Hungary to a bank director and a pianist. She was discovered as an actress in the late 1920’s and brought to Berlin. While acting she became a key role in the invention of spread-spectrum technology. Her co-inventor George Antheil and herself formed a concept on the idea of frequency hopping. Which basically was the method of sending radio signals from different frequency channels. Lamarr grew up in both a different time period and country than myself so our culture differs. I was raised a Christian in California while she was raised by Jewish parents in Austria in the early 1900’s. Another part of culture we differ on is her becoming a young actress in the 1920’s, while when I was that age I was attending college thinking about becoming a doctor.

One thing that caught my eye about Ms. Lamarr is her work wasn’t initially recognized, but she didn’t let that stop her she continued to lobby and fund raise to spread word on her invention. When her co-inventor and her originally developed they targeted helping the Navy to remotely control torpedoes, but despite their efforts the Navy passed on their technology. It was re-born again in the late 1950’s the engineers at the Sylvania Electronic Systems Division revived it. This later led to the use of Lamarr’s frequency hopping concept in secure military communications. Her work on spread-spectrum has played a part in many modern wireless technologies such as bluetooth, wi-fi, and Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA). Lamarr was honored with a special award the Pioneer Award by the Electronic Frontier Foundation in 1997 just three years short of her death. If Ms. Lamarr was still living today I would be encouraged to interview her, my first question to her would be, “What helped her to keep going on her technology when she wasn’t receiving the proper recognition she deserved?”

RSS Link

I logged into my google account clicked on the news and clicked on the link technology I felt like it was most appropriate for the class. I then logged into my blog under widgets I dragged RSS over to the right on the sidebar and pasted the link I had copied from my google account. I then created a title similar to the class and chose to display five items at a time. I clicked save and went to my home page of my blog to view it and make sure it came out right. I enjoyed doing this assignment I learn something new in this class every week and it really gives me confidence on my potential skills with technology.

The little things in life we take for granted

Based on the question I chose for this weeks discussion I learned that I am very fortunate to live in this country. The basic necessities that I have access to everyday like toilet use, or clean water most people in under developed countries don’t have. As a result the risk for disease and safety increases in these area and a lot of times it accounts for high number of deaths in these countries due to lack of resources. It really is the little things in life that fortunate people take for granted.
