Gender Lens – The Intrauterine Device

The Intrauterine Device or IUD, is a method of birth control that intends to be a stress-free alternative to traditional methods of birth control such as the Pill or condoms. Initially introduced in the early 1900’s from an urban legend about camel birth control, the IUD was an idea that medical professionals sought to make perfect, in hopes that it would become a revolutionary method of contraception.

What makes the IUD an excellent choice for women is the freedom it allows and the option for zero hormone interference. However, throughout time, women have had little to do with the development of such a convenient device, with men having the most impact on various factors surrounding it.
