During this term we have covered a lot of important topics ranging from designing recruitment ads to following laws relating to hiring practices. Although, all the information is important, the one topic we talked about that has provided me with the most useful takeaways is our most recent section involving negotiation techniques and implications for job seekers.
As far as negotiation go, one of the most powerful things I learned is the motivation factor behind a company’s recruitment effort. As a candidate knowing the motivation behind a company’s hiring campaign can help determine your odds (generally) of getting the postion and determining what skills you want to show off most. In addition, knowing your own skills is another important aspect of creating a brand for yourself that you can then go sell to the company you are applying to. I’m not currently looking for a job, but when I do again I will make sure to utilize these principles so that I can elevate my resume and interviewing skills above other candidates I’m going up against.
The next topic that I found important was all the implications on job seekers. the first and last implication (1 and 9 in the lecture series) probably have made the most impact on me so far. The first implication talked about understanding the changing world, and making sure you are developing skills and knowledge that can be applied to jobs that will be available in the future. The 9th implication involved a series of simple but meaningful questions to ask yourself. the purpose is to achive a better understanding of what makes you happy in order to make sure you are on the pathways that you truly want to be on in life. I think about these type of things daily and I will defiantly do the suggested exercise of asking these questions to myself on a monthly basis!
Overall, I learned a lot of great principles in this class and will have many takeaways that will stick with me through my professional career.
