The end to the beginning

  • The origin

I believe just like many of you, I am embarking on a journey in a new career in tech. The journey perhaps began with the decision of taking on this degree course, and now we are all at the point of where we are almost at the end of the course, getting ready for the beginning of our careers, anxiously preparing for what is yet to come next, to prepare for interviews and finding tech jobs, while excited with the vast new world and opportunities available out there.

Right now, the world is scary out there, especially in this economic situation where we are facing higher living costs, higher interest rates on our debts and some of us may lose our current jobs. The news of major tech companies cutting another X% of jobs comes every other day. At the same time, we are fighting and learning to transition into a brand new industry that we have no experience in other than what we may have learnt here in school.

This is when it is important to remind ourselves of why we embarked on this journey.

Funny enough, I guess my interests into tech perhaps began with blogging. I was fortunate enough back in around 2007, I had access to internet regularly despite probably using a 56K modem and I discovered a blogging website called Xanga. It was a lot of fun because it is one of those blogging websites where they allow you to customize your site with custom javascripts and html codes. Of course, I was very young and inexperienced, but it got me very intrigued with all the functions I could add to my website that I googled and explored in all sorts of Xanga code template database. Although I did not write any of those code, people began to come to me asking how I put music on the website and how I customized all sorts of things. It brought me closer to other people and I made some friends out of it.

Fast forwarding to the current days, as life moved on and Xanga does not exist anymore, I did what most people did and chose to study one particular subject, which led to my eventual career and forgot all about this. I became bored, exhausted and don’t seem to get the satisfaction out of my career. The effort I put in doesn’t equate to what I get out of it, whether monetary-wise or satisfaction-wise. I went back and remind myself of all the things that I have done all these years and figured, it is time to move on.

It was not an easy decision to take on, to move on to a different career path, but perhaps one that made a lot of sense. Seeing myself not making any progress in my current career, and the fact that my industry is very downstream of many other industries. When covid hit, we were immediately hit with all sorts of cash flow issues within the company. This is when I realized this is no longer a safe career to be in. On the other hand, the tech industry is always going to grow and expand as the world becomes more tech savvy. This is when and why I made this choice.
