Typical vs. Maximal Performance

If I were in the shoes of the business owner and had to choose which person to hire, then I would choose Avery. The reason I would choose Avery is because Avery has greater potential than Jaime. I would be betting on myself as an employer and the rest of my staff being able to assist Avery in reaching their high-performance ceiling. If Avery has a supportive environment that keeps them engaged, then I would believe that Avery would be able to consistently produce at their high-performance ceiling.

A job that would be better to hire someone like Avery is a job that is demanding and fast moving that allows for collaboration and mentorship. Avery would need help to remain consistent. A mentor or group that can keep Avery engaged would go a long way towards getting Avery to produce at their maximum potential consistently. With the job being demanding and fast paced, Avery would become more engaged. On the other hand, Jaime would become overwhelmed and potentially faulter when the pace becomes too fast, or the demands are too great for Jaime.

A job that would be good for Jaime would be one that is consistent, routine, and low stress such as an assembly line job. This would be good for Jaime as the expectations would be lower and Jaime’s consistency would be valuable. Avery would be less valuable as they would be more inclined to slack off as they would not be engaged and their high-ceiling would not be reached.
