Being a clerk at a locally owned pharmacy already comes with more responsibility than your typical chain pharmacy, so I already knew what I was coming into when I was hired for the job. After a year or so, I realized I had been assigned to take far more responsibility than I felt was being fairly compensated for. Usually, I am patient with receiving benefits from my hard work, but in this case, I was especially frustrated as I already wasn’t getting the hours I wanted. When I wasn’t granted those hours, I needed to get another job, and then the Pharmacy would call for me to come in and help additionally. My internal motivation was low, and at the time, it was not about the money. I wanted them to realize that without me, the productivity would be significantly lower. Employers who recognize effort with pay tend to have lower turnover times, and will want to continue productivity and effectiveness. This also helps with internal motivation, which overall satisfies job satisfaction. I wasn’t being met halfway, and I wasn’t willing to continue if they weren’t going to meet my expectations as I was exceeding theirs.
