HR Tactics At American Express

One company that stands out in human resources practices is American Express. Employees note that Amex emphasizes well being, psychological safety, and career growth. For example its parental leave policies are among the best in the country, and its colleague networks give people opportunities to connect and learn. American Express has over 25,000 employees with 94% of them saying that it is a good company to work for proving that large company’s can provide good human resource practices. These practices reflect what we learned in class, that effective HR supports both employee development and organizational success.

 

American Express also has a strong community outreach program that raises money for scholarships and gives back to local communities. The company’s structure is well organized, and its HR practices help retain employees while keeping them engaged and satisfied with their work.

As a manager I would like to build trust while supporting employee growth. The lectures highlighted how managers and HR work together in areas like training, performance, and workplace culture. I would aim to encourage open communication and professional development, knowing that this creates a stronger team, that works efficiently and effectively together.

The most challenging part of being a manager will likely be balancing company demands with employee needs. Deadlines and budgets can sometimes conflict with work life balance, so using HR resources such as training, wellness programs, and fair evaluations will be essential to keeping employees motivated and supported. Overall, I hope to manage in a way that values results while ensuring employees feel respected and supported, similar to what workers describe at American Express.
