International HRM

If I were to be offered an international assignment, I believe that Japan would be a very interesting country to look at. When comparing Japan to the US using Hofstede’s cultural dimensions, several differences truly stand out. (Week 10 Lecture, International HRM) The US scores very high in individualism ultimately meaning that people tend to prioritize personal goals instead of group performance. Japan higlights more of collectivism, emphasizing group harmony, team work, and loyalty to the organization.

Additionally, Japan scores higher in uncertainty avoidance, meaning that organizations tend to prefer structured planning, detailed procedures, and risk reduction. On the opposing side, the US are generally more comfortable with uncertainty and experimentation. Japan is also much more focused on long term growth oritnetation and stability. The focus on gradual improvement rather than immediate, short term results.

Looking past just cultural differences, I would also look at factors such as language barriers, cost of living, work life balance, and company culture. Japanese workplaces are known for their long working hours and strong dedication to the organization. Overall, I would likely accept the opportunity to relocate to Japan if the company provided me with the proper resources such as relocation support, cultural training, and a clear advancement within my career. Working internationally would expand my horizons by strengthening my perspectives and skills, as well as advance my long term career aspirations.
