Labor Unions
After researching labor unions and the trend of union memberships, I found that the amount of people signing up to work for the union has declined due to much of our production being moved to other countries with lower rates of production. While this limits the amount of jobs that union members can work I found that there are still long term efforts in place to open up more opportunities for union workers. Likewise, I found that aside from the reasons listed in our lecture, many people join the union for equality. Union jobs often consist of equal rights and equal pay which makes them very appealing for people who have felt that they have been discriminated against in the workplace. I would be in favor of joining a union due to the benefits and security of being under a union. Although, I feel that there is limited room for growth in a union job therefore there may be limited opportunities for career advancements and promotions. Also, based on my research it seems that union jobs often consist of tough work environments due to hierarchical norms. Given my career has only just begun, I feel that I am more motivated working in a position in which I can grow and develop. Lastly, because there has been a decline in union memberships, the overall trend of unions does not seem secure enough to maintain a long term position. In retrospect, I feel that unions pose a great opportunity for certain individuals to secure a job with good wages and benefits yet I feel that there is not enough job diversity for unions to continue to grow and create opportunities.
