Unionization

Today unions offer a lot of benefits for employees. There are around 16 million employees that work for unions and they are able to get together and create better working conditions, pay, and benefits. Many employees have gone to work every single day and felt like their voice is not being heard, the union offers each employee a voice that their peers and higher-ups hear. Also, the unions in America are extremely diverse offering 10 of the 16 million jobs to people of color. Unions strengthen democracy by giving workers a voice in policy debates. The people within the union are able to change the company with their voices and this also lets them change the company based on current issues and policies in the nation.

I reached out to made dad becasue he is in the elevator union. My dad has worked for the union for over 25 years and has enjoyed almost every minute of it. One thing he said that was so amazing about the union is its medical benefits. He said that although he has union dues they are going to a good cause that has helped him in a lot of tough times. He also stated that the pay is very fair. The union offers great pay as well as benefits, paid time off, and a fair amount of holidays and vacation days.

In lecture one of this course, we learned how unions are a collective group of people that can promote change. This paired with my dad’s response to unions makes me actually feel better about joining a union.
