Week 10

I started off watching What Design Can Do with Guto Requena. He discusses the potential of how technology and love can be brought together with design, and how design should stimulate empathy and love. Creative energy should be put towards creating positive social impact.

The next video I watched was Uncovering the Design Philosophy of Lu Yongzhong. He emphasized how design expresses something without the use of words. It expresses care toward humanity and life aspiration. There is a story behind every line and detail, hence less is more. Yongzhong had created a “flute” incense holder back in 1999. The design allows the smoke to come out of the different holes of the “flute”, allowing one to feel the passage of time and how we can slow down.

Something that resonated with me from What is the Future of Design Thinking is that it’s important to design beyond from today’s needs. Looking towards the “edge” and what the potentials are, and then making decisions towards those extremes. All while understanding that this “edge” will continue to grow, as our shifts will need to as well.

Week 8

From the Design Bootleg reading this week, the main thing I really took away from it was to prototype as if you know you’re right, and test as if you know you’re wrong. It’s a different way to put it, but when you’re creating something, you want to keep in mind everything you know about the users and what they currently use. But then when you’re testing the prototype, having that mindset that you’re “wrong” and there can be improvements made is important to gain more insight and progress your product/service.

The 5 Lenses of Adventurous Thinking was an interesting read because it explained things in a different perspective. In the images above, I use the arrow from FedEx to represent negative space. In this reading, it explained that the negative space is not the focus, but it is useful because it gives context. Negative space is physical, durational, and perceptional. And then the thinking sideways was a good way to summarize understanding your own point of view and preferences, but also being able to understand the point of view and preferences that you’re not used to. It’s effective to discover new and more solutions and ideas that might not have been known otherwise.

Week 7

  • Prototyping reveals the designer’s assumptions and biases towards their ideas as well as reveals user insights. Prototyping helps explore problems, ideas, and opportunities.
  • Prototypes are tangible representations of a designer’s ideas and solutions… A ‘thinking by doing’ mindset allows more elaborate results (more value) when design thinking
  • The Shape of Design emphasizes how empathy is a very important aspect of delightful design. The experience of using the design makes it delightful. Chapter nine compares it to experiencing food. A chef can plate a dish aesthetically, but it doesn’t matter if it doesn’t taste good. All design is experience design.
  • In order for a designer to create a meaningful design, they have to think of the users in order to accommodate them, making it humanized. A delightful design is humanized through its tone and effect,  making it easier for the user to recognize the designer behind the work.

The Shape of Design: Chapter 6

I’ve learned that being aware of what’s around you and continuously responding to the changes around you will help you grow with the shifts happening around you.
