Labor Unions in an Organization

Labor unions exist all over different organizations and they all based around workers getting together and promoting their interest in receiving the rights in the workplace and being treated fairly. Typically, these labor unions are fighting the most in the interest to receive better pay, benefits, and working conditions, and most of the time, these tend to work out for the employees and they get what they want. This had led to many companies coming up with union contracts which increase the difficulty in firing unproductive employees, and in the long run will increase costs.

In this week’s learning, it was somewhat different as I did learn that the employer does hold rights, such as the union contracts, that prohibits all of these union activities from being organized during working hours and in work areas, along with the employer voicing their opinion and that they would prefer to keep the company union free. In my readings, I did see that most employees will still form these unions and do what they believe is right because that is what they want to receive. I believe that the biggest takeaways I learned about these unions is the ability they have to make the workplace better for employees such as salary and benefits and just allowing them to have a better workplace and enjoy their job more.

For me joining a union, it would really depend on the job and the situation. If it is a job that I love and wouldn’t want to go anywhere else, I might just to receive better benefits at my dream job, however if it is just a normal job that can be replaced, I would much rather leave and find a better organization to work for.
