My OSU Journey

Blog Post #3
Hello Everyone, my name is Jacob Summers and this is my final semester at OSU. I started this program in the winter semester of 2022 and have learned so much along the way.
What got you started with computers or software? Not to sound cliche, but I have always been the nerdy/tech type of person growing up. I was the kid taking apart iPhones and replacing their LCD/digitizers so that I could have a colored iPhone, back when iPhones were only black or white. I have also had almost every gaming console that has released during my lifetime. Technology has just always interested me. My first degree was in biology, and I really enjoyed learning about how living things worked. However, I did not find the work in that field to be very satisfying. I had kept wondering what my life would be like if I took the leap to learn about something (computer science) that I enjoyed using in my everyday life. When I learned about OSU’s program and the ability to continue working while pursuing this dream, I decided to take the leap!
Your future career
My goal for my future career is to be a software engineer. I really enjoy the type of problem solving that comes with creating software. Unfortunately, I worked full time through the majority of this program and will be graduating without any internship experience. I have been working on my LC skills and polishing up my resume to hopefully find a job soon!
Journey with OSU
My journey at OSU has taught me so much. I remember doubting that I could complete this degree on my first day, when I struggled to get PyCharm working correctly for CS 161. I had never taken any type of programming class before OSU. Now, as I finish up the program, I actually feel confident in myself to learn new technologies on my own. By no means do I feel like an expert, but I do feel like I have the necessary skills to build on. For me, that confidence allows me to continue learning and get better at programming.
Kids, pets, hobbies, sports, games, activities, etc
I am currently married with no children, but I do have a 2 year old golden doodle named Teddy who can be quite the handful. In my free time, I enjoy playing video games with my friends and going on walks with my wife and dog. I do not play any sports, but I am a huge Kansas City Chiefs fan!
Overall, this program has been really great to me. It has given me the skills necessary so that I can continue learning outside the classroom. Hoping to land a job soon, so that I can get paid to learn!
