A Student’s Take on HR

Companies like American Express, Fannie Mae, and Delta Air Lines show how thoughtful HR practices can create positive, productive work environments. At American Express, there’s a strong focus on employee well-being and leadership development. Their flexible work policies and investment in training programs help employees grow and feel supported. Fannie Mae takes a similar approach, with an emphasis on internal mobility and learning opportunities. They also make diversity, equity, and inclusion a core part of their business, which strengthens their culture and employee engagement. Delta Air Lines stands out for its commitment to employee recognition. Their profit-sharing program and focus on frontline service training are great examples of how HR can directly impact morale and performance.

As I think about the kind of manager I want to be, I’m inspired by how these companies put people first while still meeting business goals. I want to lead with empathy and clear communication, helping my team feel valued and supported. I also believe in encouraging professional growth by creating opportunities to learn and take on new challenges. A strong team is built on trust and collaboration, and I want to be the kind of manager who fosters both.

I think one of the biggest challenges will be balancing individual employee needs with the goals of the organization. It’s not always easy to navigate tough conversations or moments of change, but those are also opportunities to lead with integrity. As we learned in class, good managers align people, motivate them, and help set a clear direction forward.
