Introduction

The current INTO OSU program continues a long tradition of service to students from other countries at OSU. International students have been made welcome at OSU for more than 100 years. During many of those early years, English instruction for international visitors was part of the job of the English department. Then, in 1964, the university created the OSU English Language Institute, one of the first intensive English programs in the United States. Forty-five years later in 2009, OSU took another major step by creating a new program, INTO OSU, wherein English language instruction and international support services became an even more prominent component of the university.

The overall supervision of the language programs is the responsibility of the Director of Academic Programs.  The Director of Academic Programs has a direct line to the Associate Provost for International Programs and through this position to the OSU Provost Office.  Thus, all academic staff are OSU employees and all academic matters are the responsibility of OSU.  The Director of Academic Programs also has a dotted line to the INTO OSU Center Director with regard to day-to-day operations.

The INTO OSU Programs

English language instruction, admissions, recruitment and student services for international students at OSU are provided by a partnership entity called INTO Oregon State University. INTO OSU is an initiative to increase the number of and percentage ratio of international students at OSU and to improve the overall level of service that OSU provides for them. INTO OSU is based on a partnership agreement between the Oregon State University Foundation and INTO University Partnerships (IUP), a private corporation first established in the United Kingdom in 2005. There are currently about 20 INTO centers worldwide, in the UK and the US.

Using a network of independent agents and regional recruiting managers, INTO OSU recruits and enrolls international students in a variety of programs:

* Pathway Programs (PW)

* Academic English Program (AE)

* General English Program (GE)

* Conditional admissions Program (CAP).

* Direct entry into other undergraduate or graduate programs.

* Special short-term programs, e.g. tailored for groups of teachers.
