My Capstone Journey

Embarking on the journey to develop a cross-platform fitness app has been a transformative experience. My capstone project aims to fill a gap in the fitness app market by creating an application that caters to individual fitness goals, attributes, and plans, beyond just weight loss. This blog article will walk you through the conception, development, and refinement of this innovative app. The inspiration for this project came from a personal observation: most fitness apps on the market are predominantly focused on weight loss. While this is a significant goal for many, it neglects the diverse fitness aspirations people have. Whether it’s building muscle, increasing speed, enhancing flexibility, or simply maintaining a healthy lifestyle, I realized there was a need for a more comprehensive solution. The first step was extensive research. I delved into various fitness methodologies, consulted with fitness trainers, and reviewed existing fitness apps to identify their strengths and weaknesses. This research phase was crucial in understanding the diverse needs of users and how to effectively address them. With a clear vision in mind, I moved on to designing the app. Using tools like Sketch and Figma, I created wireframes and prototypes. The goal was to ensure a user-friendly interface that could seamlessly adapt to different fitness plans. User feedback during this stage was invaluable, leading to several iterations and improvements. The development phase involved using cross-platform frameworks like React Native to ensure the app would be accessible on both iOS and Android. Key components included user profile setup, an algorithm that suggests exercises based on the user’s input, and a progress tracking system. Creating this fitness app has been a rewarding and enlightening experience. It has not only honed my technical skills but also deepened my understanding of the diverse needs within the fitness community. I am excited to see how this app evolves and continues to help users achieve their unique fitness goals.

What got you started with computers or software?

I started getting interested in the technology sector during my internship at a company called CompTIA, which provided educational resources and learning material for IT and Cybersecurity professionals. Learning and helping to develop the different course materials really made me interested in starting to code, as I was able to learn about the implications that technology had on our future. During that summer, I started to learn Java through a free University of Illinois virtual course, in which I learned the basics of Java. In addition, throughout my summer at CompTIA I was tasked with learning about the implications that AI had on our future. This was around the time where ChatGPT was just starting to get popularized, so it was a great experience being able to read and write about it. This lead me to wanting to learn more about computers, so after doing some research, I learned about the Post Baccalaureate program at OSU, which lead me to enroll in the program immediately following my previous undergrad school.
