This blog documented the activities during an 8 day research cruise in 2010 aboard the R/V Pelican in the Gulf of Mexico. There were 11 scientists on board and all were invited to add  their own perspectives.

This was a 3 ship operation. The R/V Pelican was the lead research vessel and mapped the distributions of fish (underwater acoustics), zooplankton (optical plankton counter and acoustics) and physical/chemical conditions. A second vessel followed  the lead vessel targeting midwater and bottom trawls at fish concentrations identified by the Pelican. This effort was expected to help identify fish species, get detailed measurements of sizes and save fish samples for subsequent diet and chemical analyses. The third vessel collected additional biological samples for zooplankton.
