Thoughts on Capstone:

I think the Capstones curriculum should be changed. First, the classes need to be in a sequence, which I was not advised so I ended up waiting a whole year before restarting. The class gives us theoretical experience in the actual work field, but my question is why can’t we get actual experience? I transferred in from Mt.Hood CC as a junior and was advised it was too late to apply for Meecop because it is typically done as sophomores. If we were setting Capstone projects as internships like in Meecop, I believe it would help people find work and expand their network giving them more opportunities in the future. For example, I have a friend that got a position as a cloud developer with a business degree. He studied computer science for 2 years, went through Meecop, and then switch to business. After graduating struggled to find work as a business analyst due to a lack of professional experience. Out of the blue, his old manager from his internship reached out and told him that he is switching companies and needed to build a team. My friend failed the interview and was still offered a cloud developer position with a pay of 180k. For how much we are paying for school, the university should help us set up careers. I think making capstones mandatory internships could solve this problem. There is a stigma that going to college equals getting a good job and pay, but this is not the case. Im mad that kids are going into debt to study material that is free online and not guaranteed some type of professional experience preparing them for their dream jobs.

Someone in our group has sent a message to the instructor about participation issues in our team. I’ve spoken to other a member about the issue and they were was confused as well. Im not sure if the issue was directed towards me or the other person because I believe we both have contributed. The issue I have with this is the fact that someone went against our team guidelines and spoke to the professor before meeting with the team first. Our communication as a team has not been efficient and I have proposed alternative methods of communication. Previously, I have encountered the same issues in the past. Communicating what portions should be done by each person is essential. This is help track who has been slacking or who takes on more than they need. One taking up more than needed will cause resentment for others on the team and vice versa.

As for career, I am still curious about if a degree will help with professional work. My roommate graduated with a business degree but interned with Mcafee and still was able to get a top tier programming job because he knew the hiring manager personal. They taught him everything he knows during his training period. Most classes nowadays in CS have us read free articles and help tutorials online, which I believe is ridiculous for the amount we pay for school.

One life hack I have been really into is changing topics. If I am stuck on a project or question, I move on and continue with something else. It solves my paralysis analysis issue. This helps ensure I am being productive as possible.

This is my first year working from eCampus if you don’t count covid classes. I am currently out in Portland Oregon living downtown with my girlfriend and cat. Right now I would say that I am in a much more stable environment for me to continue my studies. My current job position is at Alaska airline as a ramp agent, but I am trying to get an internship at Crowd strike this summer. My roommate got a job and will be recommending me. I chose a project that resembles close to actaul field work. With Adbiz, I believe it will give me good experience in the professional field. What I really wanted to work with was the million dollar press with HP, but it was on campus only. What got me into computer science was the fact that our society is moving towards that area. The fact that we need cellphones and internet for just about everything we do says a lot about the types of jobs that will be available in the future. Overall I am excited about this project and hope to have better teammates than before.

Coming back into to the project after the break has been a little bit of a struggle. I tend to take a little time to get back into a groove of things so, I fell behind and missed a team meeting. Luckily we met up another time and got things situated. The project is still moving steadily in a somewhat slow pace, but we are still making progress. Our sponsor still has not provided us a set framework for the front end development of the project which is a big part of my personal contribution. Originally it was suppose to be React, but now it might change because we do not know if it will integrate with ploty. What I need to do is look up alternate options or maybe find a way to integrate it. I personally have not work with the framework so I do not know why we can not integrate the 2 together.

As for myself in my computer science career., I have notice that it can not be a hobby. Doing this type of work means that one must always be up to date with new technology and consistently working on their skills because you will forget a lot fast. Personal goals that have set for myself is to make sure I do some type of coding or related research each day to keep consistent and improve my skills.

Questions I have been wondering about pertains to artificial intelligence. I know that AI takes lots of user data and interprets them for predictions, but what I want to know is how it works? Nothing I have learned has gone in depth about this. The other thing I am questioning or curious about is bit coin mining. How does that work and is it safe? These will be some things I will be looking into.

This week we set up our workspace to integrate with HP’s workflow. I personally missed the meeting to help my brother out, but the video was recorded. We also finally found out our tasks. The two teams will be working on separate functionalities of the product. My team is in charge of the data flywheel implementation. We have to build API to handle .json files of geometric inputs and outputs to the data base. My personal task is to build and design the front end graphical user interface as a first step then help build the API. Communication seems to be good and steady and I have no complaints about team members. As for the sponsor project I would like to address that we are moving at a very slow pace. It is the start of the 6th week and we have hardly done anything. Writing the assignments out like requirements and problem statement was tough. I had to assume a lot of things. I am curious how far along other groups have gotten. I know some projects are 3 months so id assume they have made a lot of progress. Hopefully the project we create is something unique and useful. This is the longest project I have ever worked on. Maybe slow thoughtful actions and preparation is needed to ensure a high quality useful product. It would be a shame to build something for HP and they don’t end up using it. What I want to know still is if we can consider this as experience on my resume. We are meeting with multiple teams in different working departments to build a software needed by a company. This includes 2 weekly meetings within my personal team and a group team as a whole. From my knowledge this seems exactly like how it would be if I worked with the company remotely. Other random things I was thinking about was how will I keep up to date in the software industry. Is there news articles, youtube channels or something else to help me stay up to date. This industry is constantly changing and falling behind can be detrimental for your career. I also need to set up a internship for this summer or job search. My meeting with to advisors was to start applying for everything early as possible. I read some articles and reddit posts about software engineers in the auto industry and saw some negative feedback. They didn’t treat their workers with a lot of respect. Maybe it was the company, but I can not be in that type of workspace. Silicon valley is a place where software engineers are treated very well especially in the big companies. It is a very saturated place and I would need to stand out from competition.
