Gender Lens Project

Overall I think I did better on this project than I did on the first one. One of the things that I struggled with was keeping my word count down. I really felt that this project could have used a little more wiggle room when it came to word count. I found this project a lot more interesting and would have loved to include more information on topics like education and user assistance. I added more pictures this time in hopes of keeping people interested. I really like the manufacturing video that I found for condoms, and I hope my peers found it educational as well as interesting.

That’s about it for this week!

Gender Lens Project

Overall this project is going really well for me! I unfortunately had a bit of a late start and so only part of my project is posted right not. I do intend to have the rest of it up by Thursday so hopefully I will still get good feedback from my peers. I am finding quite a bit of information about everything except sales demographics. Then I need to start adding in my links for my works cited. I think overall that I’m covering a wide parameter of my topic, I just hope I can fit everything in 2000 words or less. Well, so far so good!

Gender Lens Research Progress

Overall I feel like my research is going really well. I have found tons of information on both how condoms are made as well as the history of condoms. I feel as though I’m learning a lot about an object that is pretty commonly advertised for in our society. I haven’t truly decided how I’m going to look at Condoms as an object directed at women or men quite yet, but I think with a little more information I’ll be able to decide which direction I want to take this project in.

I spoke with a librarian a little, but I really don’t have any questions as there seems to be quite a lot of information on this topic readily available.

When it comes to saving sources I have kind of a long process. I usually look up a ton of different sites where I can find information and bookmark them by saving them into a folder on my web browser. Then later I go through each page and decide if the source will be a good contribution while also gauging the credibility of the source. Then when I make my citations I go on Easybib and just make them there because that’s what I’m comfortable using.

That’s all for this week!

Uploading images & Legos!

I think I did an okay job at uploading the image I chose for my Culture Research Project. I tried a few different ways to get the caption right, but it didn’t end up working out so I just put it in the text. Overall this week was pretty dreary.

Legos: I have never really used legos. Growing up we (my cousins, sisters, and I) were all given the building logs that connect on the ends so you could build things. Though, all we were really able to build was little cabins so we got bored pretty quickly. Legos were just too expensive to buy, and when one of my boy cousins got them for his birthday no one else was allowed to touch them. We all kind of got over wanting to have them pretty fast. Overall  I think I’m glad that we got our building logs instead because it inspired us to be more creative and because there were so few logs, it taught us how to conserve and cut down our uses.

Cultural Research: Challenges

This project was a bit of a challenge for me, mostly it was just finding time to actually research. I also ran into a bit of trouble with finding information about Adi Tatarko’s personal life, which I think is due to her wanting to protect her privacy. However, this project also challenged many preconceived notions I had about Israel. To learn that a nation like this one was so progressive was quite a shock.

I really enjoyed reading about women’s equality and how in Israel it has never been questioned. I found it really interesting how women in the united states are still discriminated against when countries that might be considered-to those not as educated on the subject- in the U.S. to be less progressive  would have such a liberal approach to women’s rights. Where as in the U.S. we consider ourselves to be one of the most technologically advanced countries, and yet for issues like gender equality we are so far behind.

Overall this project was mostly just time consuming, but not overly complicated. Although I do wish I would have divided up my time more efficiently in order to go a lot more in depth on subjects like trends. But, sadly I didn’t allocate that time. I would recommend to any one in the future doing this project to start with the more complex topics like trends and technology. Then, do the biography and culture at the end of the week. But overall, I think it went well.

Researching Adi Tatarko

Meeting with the librarian:

Overall it went well. I used the online version because I did not have time during the week to go and speak to an actual librarian. I couldn’t find any information on the search engines at first, so I had to ask the librarian what specific terms might help get me better results. I was told to search less specifically at first then to get more in depth after I had read some articles to give me a better idea of what exactly I was researching.

Search Engines:

I also had to switch search engines a couple of times, the Academic Search Premier engine really had nothing to offer. It was definitely a bit frustrating at first, but once I got a solid timeline down  about Adi Tatarko’s life I was able to define my searches even more. I am kind of wondering how much of the Palestinian/ Israeli conflict I should include if any of it. While it is a large part of the way their culture and life style was developed, it might become too confusing to readers to understand and really value the significance.

Over all, I was able to find quite a lot about Israeli-Jewish lifestyle and their culture. However, I am a little bit concerned about the technology page since Israel is such a progressive country. I’ll be doing more research throughout this week as well as constructing the pages that are due this week.

Adi Tatarko: Co founder and CEO of Houzz

Adi Tatarko, the CEO and co-founder of the website Houzz, was born in Israel. She grew up in a progressive household and society very similar to that of the European countries such as France. Both her mother and grandmother were working women who balanced their familial responsibilities and their careers. Tatarko created the site after she and her husband kept running into difficulties renovating their own home.

The online photo database was started in 2006 after she realized no one else on the internet had been able to accomplish such a task. Originally a weekend project, Houzz quickly grew to need more time and money, which Tatarko provided with a cautious approach. Her top priority was to make sure the site wasn’t intimidating and was easy to use. Houzz grew to become one of the most successful home renovation websites available.

She currently lives in Silicon Valley with her husband and her two sons. I would be very interested in interviewing her because she focuses on what would be perfect for her customer, not what would make the most profit. I would additionally like to ask her about growing up in a newly progressive country like Israel, and if there are any challenges she has faced or faces daily.

Blogging Part Two!

Welcome back after an exciting week two!

Here’s a brief summary about this weeks blogging challenges:

Well, it was pretty confusing to me that when you edit/customize a blog you (meaning I) don’t see the new colors on the bloggers menu, you have to go to your actual blog site. So, after applying the same theme four times I figured that one out. Over all I think this week went pretty smoothly, although I do want to get a better handle on the designing part of the blog. I couldn’t really decide on a theme though, so I ended up with what my roommate called “Easter colors”.

Thankfully the blogging for this week seemed pretty simplistic! I’m interested to see if I can turn this in to a consistent thing, even after the class ends. I always see videos of famous bloggers but I always wonder what it is they have so much to write about.

Well that’s all for this weeks blogging excitement!
