2019 CPHHS All Clubs Winter Event

Considering getting involved in a club? Come learn about ALL the clubs in the College of Public Health and Human Sciences in one place at the CPHHS All Clubs Winter Event! Each club will give a brief overview of their organization and why you should get involved. Kinesiology Experiential Learning Site Visits

This spring, join fellow Kinesiology students and Kinesiology Experiential Learning Coordinator, Slade Thackeray, to visit Kinesiology experiential learning sites in the Corvallis and Beaverton areas. These site visits are great ways to learn about your interests, talents, and what sites would fit you well for internships and practicum experience. Potential site visits include personal trainers, clinics, and other sites that encourage wellness. Interested? Getting the Most from Undergraduate Research Workshop

Want to learn how to get involved in research at OSU, and how to make the most of it during your time here? The Office of Undergraduate Research, Scholarship & the Arts is hosting a workshop called Getting the Most from Undergraduate Research, which will take place Wednesday, February 20th from 5:30-7:00pm. Students will learn about applying for prestigious awards, presentation and publication opportunities, marketing themselves as a researcher, getting transcript-visible research credits, finding funding, and more!  The workshop is open to ALL students at OSU. Beaver Basics Workshop and Consultation Sessions

Beaver Basics peer trainers offer OSU students help with Office 365 and Google productivity tools such as Excel/Sheets, PowerPoint/Slides, and Word/Docs. Short workshops (5-7 minutes) and one-to-one consultations are available in the Valley Library through Spring term. Peer trainers will also help students access and download applications from Office 365. All workshop and consultation sessions are drop-in (no registration required). New Nutrition Course Offering for Spring 2019

NUTR 299: Applications in Food & Nutrition: Healthy Meals (CRN: 60053) is now being offered for Spring 2019! This class will focus on applying healthy eating guidelines and meal planning techniques to every day life through hands-on learning activities. If you want to talk about food, learn about meal planning, and practice preparing and eating healthy meals and snacks, this class is for you! Prerequisites for this course are: HHS 231, NUTR 225 or NUTR 240. The course will meet every Thursday from 2-3:50pm. Questions? Contact Clinical Assistant Professor Jenny Jackson.

OSU Retirement Association Scholarship

The OSU Retirement Association provides scholarship support to undergraduate students at Oregon State University who are pursuing a course of study that may lead to a career promoting healthy aging. That term includes all aspects of “health” — physical, emotional, social or financial. Currently enrolled OSU undergraduate students who have completed at least one academic year at OSU, have a cumulative GPA of 3.4 or above, and have at least one year of study remaining towards their first bachelor’s (BA or BS) degree, are encouraged to apply. The scholarship amount may be up to $2,000 per person and will be awarded at the OSURA Annual Meeting in May. Funds will be distributed into student accounts for the 2019-2020 academic year. Job Opportunity through OSU Precollege Programs

OSU Precollege programs is looking to fill 12 positions (3 hours a week during spring term and 40 hours per week during summer camps) for the iINVENT middle school summer camps. Camp instructors will run day camps and work with youth, parents, families, and community partners to support Invention Education as they travel throughout Oregon all summer. Youth will be challenged to apply science, technology, math, and engineering concepts to create inventions to meet specific user needs over the course of the camp. Examples of camp activities include Edison Robots, making Windmills, making solar/Kinect carts, creating circuits, and invention themed design challenges. Summer camps will be held at schools, boys and girls clubs, and/or community centers.  Lodging, transportation, and food stipends, if required, will be provided. Corvallis Housing Fair and App 

Haven’t found housing for next year yet, or have no idea where to start looking? Don’t worry! The Corvallis Housing Fair and Corvallis Housing App are two great resources brought to students by ASOSU and Orange Media Network. The Corvallis Housing Fair will take place in the MU Ballroom on Wednesday, February 20th from 11-4:00 pm, and is a great way to connect with local housing vendors, gain some insights on places to live (both on and off campus) next year,  and get $50 off your security depositThe Corvallis Housing App gives students an easy way to browse through listings from housing providers in the Corvallis area depending on their own housing requirements. Check out the app here.

Boldly Me Health Week

Boldly Me is a week full of events focused on healthy sexuality and promoting inclusivity for diverse gender identities and sexual orientations. This week is all about celebrating the uniqueness contributed by each and every member of the OSU community through events designed to promote healthy relationships, increase understanding of consent, and showcase individuality in identity. Boldly Me Health Week is taking place THIS WEEK from February 18-21, 2019. Events are made possible through collaborative efforts by Student Health Services and the Wellness Agents, the OSU Craft Center, OSU Program Council, UHDS, CAPS, the Pride Center, the Hattie Redmond Women and Gender Center, SHS Prevention and Wellness, Dixon Rec Sports Programs and Physical Activity Peer Team, SARC, and a group of generous community donors. Events throughout the week include the sexual health fair, zine crafting, interpersonal communication workshops, coffee and consent, student panel, professional panel, body positivity activity fair, and a variety show. New HDFS Course Offering for Spring 2019

HDFS 460: Family Policy (4) explores how policies affect families and how professionals play a critical role in shaping policies to strengthen families. The course will examine types of family structures, constantly evolving family functions, and how government policies shape various dimensions of family life. The Spring 2019 course will take place on Mondays and Wednesdays, 10-11:30am. Job Opportunity with Student Health Services

Do you want to influence student health and well-being on campus? Apply to become a Wellness Agent! Wellness Agents have unique opportunities to get involved in prevention and wellness efforts at OSU. Each term, they help plan large awareness events and educate the student population on college health issues. Wellness Agents are trained to be campus leaders and work in a cohort. They have opportunities to work with professional faculty and apply skills outside of the classroom to promote health and well-being. Wellness Agents must be able to serve in the position for a minimum of three terms (first term is dedicated to training) and serve at least 15 hours per term (about 1-2 hours per week). Job Opportunities in the Academic Success Center

The Academic Success Center (ASC) is currently hiring students for two different positions: ASC Strategists and Supplemental Instruction Leaders (SILs). ASC Strategists promote engagement with university students, helping students to navigate the university landscape and cultivate strong academic habits. They are responsible for consulting with students on a walk-in basis, creating a welcoming atmosphere in the ASC front office (Waldo 125), and supporting the Academic Coaching Program. Supplemental Instruction Leaders lead group study tables for a range of courses. Flexible hours and ongoing professional development are also offered for this position, and previous experience in peer education is not required. Oregon Patient Safety Commission’s 8th Annual Oregon Patient Safety Event

The Oregon Patient Safety Commission invites interested CPHHS students to attend the 8th Annual Oregon Patient Safety Event on Friday, March 15th, at the Sentinel Hotel in downtown Portland. This event is hosted each year to bring together Oregon’s healthcare community around a mission to improve patient safety. This year’s event will feature speaker Dr. Jo Shapiro, Director of the Center for Professionalism and Peer Support at Brigham & Women’s Hospital. Dr. Shapiro’s presentation and workshop will focus on nurturing clinician well-being by creating a culture of psychological safety in healthcare organizations. The full event will take place from 8-11am and include a full breakfast. Students can register for the event here. Two program faculty or staff are also invited to attend, and can register here. The event has been approved for 2.5 hours of CME and CE credit. Healthy Aging Club

Students from all disciplines are encouraged to attend the OSU Healthy Aging Club meetings. This unique club offers students a chance to learn about careers in aging, interact with elders in our community, and gain experience for graduate school or work beyond college.
