NIST – Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) research opportunities – Gaithersburg, MD or Boulder, CO.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology’s (NIST) Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program is for undergraduates at a U.S. university or college with a scientific major, have a G.P.A. of 3.0/4.0 or better, and are considering pursuing a graduate degree (M.S. or Ph.D.). Students with physics, material science, chemistry, applied mathematics, computer science, or engineering majors are always encouraged to apply. There may be research opportunities for students with other majors. Students may apply for either the NIST site in Gaithersburg, MD or Boulder, CO.

Deadline: February 15, 2011

Applications consist of two parts: (1) The student’s university must submit a grant proposal that provides details about its academic program and must nominate one or more students. Inclusion of a narrative on each student is encouraged. (2) Students must provide copies of their transcripts, two letters of recommendation, and a letter of intent or personal statement. The letter should contain information that helps the review committee make an informed decision about the student, such as why the student wants to participate in the SURF NIST Gaithersburg or Boulder program and what areas of NIST research interest the student.

SURF students receive stipend, and housing and travel allotments (as needed). Students who complete the full 11 week program will receive a $5,000 stipend.

This is a competitive program that reviews both the university and student portion of the application to determine the final list of SURF awardees. The NIST SURF program will support approximately 100 students.
