For the first question, can experiments detect differences that matter, this has significance in interpreting scientific literature because if there are no significant differences detected in experiments, that those experiments don’t really matter as much. This question is critical in interpreting scientific literature because it’s a good weed-out question for deciding which published papers really… Continue reading Writing Exercise #9

I think that Nowak’s commentary was very helpful in understanding the Fleischmann article. The Fleischmann article was hard for me to read, because it was long and filled with technical terms (the majority of which I didn’t understand), so it was helpful to have shorter article to break down the Fleischmann one. I thought Nowak’s… Continue reading Writing Exercise #8

1) Adele Mennerat and Ben C. Sheldon in their research article entitled “How to Deal with PCR Contamination in Molecular Microbial Ecology” (2014) asserts that the presence of contaminant bacterial DNA may have consequences in the interpretation of ecological data, especially when low levels of template DNA from highly diverse communities is used, thus advocating… Continue reading Writing Exercise #7

I had no prior experience/exposure to DNA sequence analysis and chimera detection, and my only prior exposure to coding in general was a Python class I took in high school, so this was a very confusing experience for me at the beginning (and is honestly still confusing). It was very difficult for me to understand… Continue reading Writing Exercise #6

Due to issues with Zoom, we never actually got to do the panel review for proposals, so I only had access to the 3 proposals that we looked at in my breakout room. I think that reviewing and analyzing those 3 proposals really inspired me to be more creative in terms of what I could… Continue reading Writing Exercise #5

Describe the process of peer review to someone who doesn’t frequently read scientific articles. Consider the pros and cons of peer review and how that might impact the credibility of the results that come from that scientific article. Peer review is a process where research papers and articles in the science world (although peer reviewing… Continue reading Writing Exercise #3

I’ve peer reviewed other things in the past, but I don’t think I’ve ever peer reviewed a research proposal before, so this was definitely a new experience for me. It was a little hard for me to feel like I properly critiqued someone else’s writing, since I’m not an expert in their experimental procedures nor… Continue reading Writing Exercise #2

Characteristics of a microbial population that I can think of include things like composition, access to sunlight, access to oxygen, and denitrification potential. These differ from a microbial community because microbial communities are groups of microbes that live in the same area, whereas microbial populations are the groups that form these communities.
