Battle of the Bands  June 3rd, 2011

The widely known OSU musical traditions, Battle of the Bands and the Flat Tail Music Festival, are here again and are expected to have the largest turnout in the MU Quad ever.

“This is like our big kickoff to the summer,” said Jennifer Lam, director of Battle of the Bands.

The opener for Battle of the Bands, Jared Mees and the Grown Children, will begin at 4:30 p.m., with competitive participants beginning at 5:30 p.m.

There are a total of ten bands competing, with the last band, Mötæ, scheduled to go on at 10:00 p.m.

After the last band has performed, the winning group will be announced, which will go on to open for the Flat Tail Music Festival, Saturday at 5:30 p.m.

“(I’m excited to) see everyone out here and excited to be listening to the music,” Lam said.

The headliner, OK Go, will begin at 10:00 p.m. and Lam says this is the biggest headliner Flat Tail has had to date. For this reason, it is expected that attendance will reach 10,000 this year, where previous years have seen an average of only 6,000.

Lam says she has been watching the weather closely and doesn’t believe it will cause any problems for the event.

Both events are sponsored by the OSU Summer Session and presented by the Memorial Union Program Council.

The event is free and open to the public.
