Battle of the Bands  June 3rd, 2011

The widely known OSU musical traditions, Battle of the Bands and the Flat Tail Music Festival, are here again and are expected to have the largest turnout in the MU Quad ever.

“This is like our big kickoff to the summer,” said Jennifer Lam, director of Battle of the Bands.

The opener for Battle of the Bands, Jared Mees and the Grown Children, will begin at 4:30 p.m., with competitive participants beginning at 5:30 p.m.

There are a total of ten bands competing, with the last band, Mötæ, scheduled to go on at 10:00 p.m.

After the last band has performed, the winning group will be announced, which will go on to open for the Flat Tail Music Festival, Saturday at 5:30 p.m.

“(I’m excited to) see everyone out here and excited to be listening to the music,” Lam said.

The headliner, OK Go, will begin at 10:00 p.m. and Lam says this is the biggest headliner Flat Tail has had to date. For this reason, it is expected that attendance will reach 10,000 this year, where previous years have seen an average of only 6,000.

Lam says she has been watching the weather closely and doesn’t believe it will cause any problems for the event.

Both events are sponsored by the OSU Summer Session and presented by the Memorial Union Program Council.

The event is free and open to the public.

Power of One  May 18th, 2011

Faculty members from Oregon State University have developed a film series focused on social justice and the struggle for equality and the inaugural event on May 17 will feature OSU basketball coach Craig Robinson and former coach Paul Valenti as part of a panel discussion.

This free public event begins at 5 p.m. in the Founders Loge at Reser Stadium (second floor, east side entrance).

Created by the Association of Faculty for the Advancement of People of Color at OSU, the “Power of One Film Series” will feature films based on individuals who have had an impact in changing society through their struggle to bring about social justice.

The first film in the series is “Glory Road,” based on the true story of Don Haskins, the head coach at Texas Western College in El Paso in the mid-1960s. Haskins was the first Division One basketball coach to recruit and play a full team of African American athletes against white athletes in a major tournament. Haskins broke an unwritten code of team segregation that had existed since basketball became a major sport on colleges across the United States and his desegregated team won the NCAA championship in his first year of coaching.
