MGMT 453 Training

Effective training is a critical element for any organization aiming to cultivate a high-performing workplace. Well-trained employees significantly enhance the likelihood of improved productivity and efficiency, while also contributing to a decrease in employee turnover owing to heightened job satisfaction. Drawing from personal experience, I have encountered both negative and positive training scenarios.

One unfavorable experience occurred during my tenure at an Amazon warehouse. The company provided on-the-job and online training sessions covering safety protocols, machine operations, and the company’s objectives. While the lessons appeared straightforward with minimal confusion, translating these learnings into practical tasks, especially when operating machinery like the standing forklift, proved challenging. The on-the-job training was brief, spanning only two days and a subsequent test. The session dedicated to operating the standing forklift lasted only about an hour, which felt insufficient for me to confidently work on the warehouse floor. The test involved individuals driving the forklift and collecting items, closely examined by a safety trainer. Unfortunately, almost every individual in the training group experienced a crash within the first week on the job. This lack of proper training for new employees increased the risk of workplace injuries, creating a challenging environment that demanded constant vigilance for potential hazards.

In contrast, a positive training experience occurred while working for Walmart. The trainers were supportive, enabling me to learn progressively rather than rushing through the training process. Within approximately a week, I gained proficiency in handling various tasks during my shift and honed my customer service skills. This robust training proved beneficial when turnover led to the arrival of new employees. Equipped with proper training, I could independently train newcomers. However, challenges arose when staff shortages impacted the completion of required tasks, and overall employee appreciation dwindled across several departments. While I would have likely continued working for the company, the increasing difficulty of balancing school and work commitments prompted me to prioritize my studies.

In summary, effective training is pivotal for fostering a positive workplace environment, and its absence poses challenges that can impact employee satisfaction, productivity, and overall organizational success.
