For this extra credit assignment, the Implicit Attitude Test that I decided to take from the Harvard University Project Implicit website was the “Race” implicit association test (IAT). My results from the study indicate a moderate automatic preference for White people over Black people. While these results startled me at first, instead of jumping the gun I took some time to reflect on my responses and their consequential results. Throughout my life I’ve been surrounded by a majority white population with an all white family and mostly white school system. When taking this into account, it then made sense why I would prefer white people to blacks simply because I’ve been accustomed to the group for my entire life.
With this being said, I in no way would discriminate against a member of the black community. I treat blacks and whites as equals as was prescribed by the great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and take pride in having a very diverse group of friends and professional acquaintances. It is also important to note that the test previously mentioned is not entirely accurate and should be taken with a grain of salt. The Harvard University Project specifically states this, mentioning that the results can be influenced by “variables related to the test (e.g., the words or images used to represent categories) and the person (e.g., being tired, what you were thinking about before the IAT)”.
Regardless, I believe that the test was overall useful and could be a great tool for companies to gain a consensus on their workforce and even the people they are looking to hire for open positions. One thing that we as a society can do to try to prevent or counteract implicit bias, is to think through our actions and thoughts and avoid over saturating our biases with mainstream media coverage (both sides) as they have been known to take the extremes from both perspectives and try to persuade their audience that theirs is the correct view. This media war has done nothing short of polarizing the nation and increasing implicit bias in their viewers without them noticing.
