The Importance of HR in Your Career

The Importance of Human Resource Management is undeniable when it comes to employee satisfaction, retention, and wellbeing.  The three companies that I have highlighted are Power Home Remodeling, Kimley – Horn Consulting, and Cisco.  All three are examples of how companies can leverage their HR systems to facilitate positive change in their people and the communities that they live in.

Power Home Remodeling

Power Home Remodeling is the nations largest exterior home remodeler.  The company has a strong charitable side which donates millions of dollars to charitable organizations.  They use a small team approach to target areas and causes that will benefit the most from meaningful impacts.  Employees feel the company has a genuine sense of putting people before profit, and that giving back is a great way to connect with the community.  Power Home remodeling has Affinity groups that encompass minority and special designations that are designed to educate, elevate, and empower each other. All of this and a great leadership program make this a great place to work.

Kimley – Horn

Kimley-Horn is a full-service consulting firm that markets engineering, planning, and design services in both the public and private sectors.  What makes this company great to work for is the extremely wide range of opportunities available and the commitment to excellence.  While the environment is fast paste, the company strives to give employees the best benefits that are available.  Along with excellent benefits, the company 100% employee owned, which means you are essentially working for yourself!  Kimley-Horn has over 140 offices worldwide, there are many opportunities for growth. 

Cisco

Cisco believes in giving back to the community.  In their TIME2GIVE program employees can receive up to 80 hours of paid time off while doing volunteer work.  Employees say that putting their physical and mental health first are an important ingredient to the high ratings.   The company is very invested in diversity, with over 30 inclusive community groups.  Cisco employees are extremely happy with their company, with a 96% saying it’s a great place to work.   

What Type of Manager Do I Want to Be

I am inclined to be a servant-leader.  I manage by way of example, and many of the attributes that make the above companies such great places to work are things that I would strive for.  I believe that the greatest good people can do is to give back to their community and be of service to those around them.  I also believe that you must treat your employees with care and respect, giving them all the benefits and opportunities that you possibly can within the constraints of your abilities.
