Job descriptions should be updated as often as necessary when any of the requirements or expected duties of a position are changed in any form. This not only helps the company and HR department avoid having to be legal in any scenario when an employee claims the job is asking them to perform tasks not initially listed in the job posting. This also helps the company be as transparent as possible with their potential and current employees and what is expected of them.
Growing and changing businesses should continue to update their job descriptions on a more frequent basis due to the level of changes being made within a one-year timeline. I have had the experience of reviewing a very vague job description in the past that led me to be skeptical of the company and curious about the reasoning behind their being so limited in the job description. This ultimately led me to avoid applying for this position and instead focus on applications that provided a meaningful and in-depth description of the required duties and expectations of that role. This gave me the confidence that the organization had a clear vision of where they wanted their company to go and how they expected their employees to help guide them to those long-term goals.
