The World of the Skateboard

According to The History of Skateboarding, the skateboard was invented in 1958 by people putting roller blade wheels onto a board. This was inspired by the growing popularity of surfing and people wanting to “sidewalk surf”.

Over the years, the skateboard has involved into not just a mode of transportation but has become a sport, an industry, and an entire culture. There are events all of the world where skaters show off their talents. ESPN hosts the X Games every year which were started because of the increase in extreme sports, led by those who used the skateboard. Where do women fit into this narrative? Ho do women and the skateboard come together and where do women fit into the cultural side of what the skateboard has created? This research will hope to highlight and answer these very questions.
