With the given course material and reading what people have to say about the companies I selected, I was able to get a good reflection on what kind of manager I would like to be. The 3 companies I have selected in the “2020 Fortune Best Companies to Work For” are Power Home Remodeling, Nvidia, and David Weekly Homes. I have chosen these companies because 2 of the 3 are construction based and I wanted to get insight on what people have to say about the management in the construction field. The 2 construction based companies have very similar management styles that I think is one of the most key components in being a great manager. The people said teamwork, communication, and culture is flawless in these companies and I would say these 3 components, especially in a construction firm, is what I would need to be a great manager. One key thing that the people said about Nvidia that interested me on the other hand is that the management trust people to do a good job without needed to be overlooked and employees are given a lot of responsibility. In other words, another crucial aspect in being a good manager is to not micromanage and give freedom with being available for advice.
After reading “How Google Sold Its Engineers on Management”, I was able to get a great understanding on how google managers empowers their teams and does not micromanage the employees. Google’s managers are willing to listen to other peoples thoughts and opinions without negative/disrespectful feedback. Google’s managers give space to be able to work independently, yet they are always there for support. Other key aspects that Google’s managers do is make it clear that they trust the employees and advocates teams with other teams.
All these components is what I strive to retain as a manager and yet, these can be the most challenging as a manager. Managers who really know what they are doing in a particular field, tend to micromanage their employees in order for it to be right every time. A manager must get out of that mindset because it doesn’t let the team grow and learn. Not everything will be correct every time, and the mistakes made are learning experiences in order to grow. I believe that these simple yet complicated components are the most valuable in being a great manager and is what I would strive for to become an ideal manager.
