Machu Picchu is considered the archeological site in Peru and the Historical Sanctuary of Machu Picchu encompasses the entire protected area. For the purpose of this project (and to not sound repetitive), these two words are used interchangeably.

Machu Picchu is a beautiful urban creation of the Incas that supports great walls, centers, and an extensive trail system that are encompassed by the slopes and mountains beside them (UNESCO, n.d-b). Machu Picchu has a lower and upper part that divide the farming and the houses. It has a intensive drainage system that works through these separate levels. Machu Picchu’s surrounding areas have many various habitats, ecosystems, plants, and animals.
