Labor Unions
Labor unions are organizations that are created by workers to help protect their rights and help improve their workplace. There are a few considerations that you have to think of before joining a union at your place of work.
First are the pros of joining a union for a worker. The first pro is it provides the works with protection. This means it can help the worker in the case of disputes or complaints with management and other workers. Some unions also subsidize legal fees for issues related to discrimination and wrongful terminations. Another pro is unions work to raise the wages where they work and benefits. Unions are also economic trend setters, and they make political organizing easier. As for the cons of being a part of a union as a worker you are required to pay dues and fees that some are not happy about. Unions also discourage individuality, meaning that all workers apart of a union bound by the decisions of the union even if they disagree with the decision.
Now for the pros of unions for employers it has been shown that they reduce turnover in the workplace. Unions also help with worker productivity which is another pro for the employer. Some cons of unions for employers is unions focus more on the seniority of workers making it hard to promote or terminate workers. Unions can also drive-up costs because there is higher compensation.
As for how unions affect society there are a few different things that they create. The first thing is they help raise wages for all workers and try to close the wage gap. They also help improve non-wage benefits for workers. They can also help reduce economic inequality.
