I have seen first hand how a union at an industrial environment work and as I was the intern for the project manager I know much he does not like working with the union workers and tries to avoid as much work he hand off to them as possible. From the perspective of a project manager I would see that the union workers would not integrate themselves with our schedule because they had certain things they had to meet within being a union. Which is what this weeks outline states about how employers feel, unions constrain what managers can and cannot do. There are times where the project manager was able to push the contractors to do more while the union side of workers had limits. On the other hand unions in the construction industry to tend to have more available workers, who have quality to their work as well, but since they do require more upfront it is hard to budget with them and be a competitor against other bidders. Working as upper management I would not like to join or be apart of a union because of the increase costs it would be to run a union firm. I think there are many other ways that can provide enough to make the work environment feel like a union without being a union. In the construction industry there are many ways that workers are protected during work hours, benefits are usually always good, and there are more movements that persuade employers to provide mental health programs. If I was a worker for example at Amazon or Starbucks, they have clearly shown that the conditions of working there are not humanitarian and by unionizing they are given so many of the things that would make these large companies that have a lot of equity to provide back into the workers that make the company move forward. The circumstances of whether to be union or not is complicated and whether being upper management or level 1 play a massive role of being for or against it.
