Job Application Experiences

The most recent job that I have applied for I am actually still in the application process for as well. After I applied on the company website I got an email within a week setting up a phone interview with a recruiter. After the phone interview I got another email a week or so after that instructing me to pick a time to have an in person interview with two managers in Portland. Shortly after that, this was changed to a Skype interview because of the public health safety concerns we have been facing this month. About a week after these interviews I got another email from a senior manager setting up another phone interview, which I have tomorrow morning!

From the start the application process was easy to follow and the software they use didn’t seem outdated or sub par which a lot of other internships I’ve applied for the companies have had some funky HRIS situations, at least from the applicant side. The communication from the company to me about the process has been timely and clear which is another thing I have really appreciated. I think this also has made them seem more organized to me which is something I am looking for in a company that I work for even just for an internship. All three of the people I have spoken to so far have been professional and organized in their process as well. The way they acted in the interview gave me confidence in the company. I also like that they used Skype to do the interview instead of just canceling, this also gave me confidence and more of an interest in the company because they were using technology in this way. Overall, throughout the process I have seen positive behaviors and signs from the start until now that convey to me that the company culture is such that I would fit in and enjoy working there. I am hoping to hear good news after this last interview tomorrow!

    1. Great post! I am glad that the process was fairly smooth. I been in situations in which the process took a little longer because the website they had me applying for wasn’t updated so all my information was separated. I also agree with you if the company shows professionalism and are well organized it shows a lot about the company and it makes me feel like I could be a part of them too. I wish you good luck and hope you got (get)the job!

  2. I agree that when companies have difficult or confusing online application processes, it can definitely be frustrating and can even stop candidates from applying for jobs where the process is simply too convoluted. It is also a positive sign, like you mentioned, that the company chose to do a Skype interview rather than cancel altogether. I think this shows that the company cares about their interviewees and is taking the process seriously, regardless of complications they have no control over.

  3. Hey Katharine,
First of all congratulations on getting that far in the interview process already. It is difficult to do so and it sounds like they are communicating well with you throughout the process. I had a company that I was supposed to interview with and they kept cancelling and rescheduling to the point where it showed me they did not care about it at all. I think that the company you are working with now is taking the process seriously and professionally even with everything going on. Seeing people face to face allows you to also have a better understanding of their true feelings and not just what you think they meant by something. Good luck again with that interview!

  4. That is great that you’ve had such a positive experience being recruited for this company, even amongst all the chaos and health and safety threats that our world has been dealing with. The companies use of technology to shift from in person interviews to video chat interviews shows they are resourceful and organized, and know how to be flexible, and these are characteristics of a company I myself would want to work for. Some companies simply did not even contact their interviewees back during this time of uncertainty and crisis, so the fact that this company was still very responsive to you during this time shows that are a very professional company, have a good working culture, and know how to make their recruitment process great!

  5. Hi Katharine,
It sounds like the application and interview process has been pretty smooth so far. It is nice that they are willing to do a remote interview. I have noticed many companies are delaying interviews until after the COVID-19 to reduce resources. Do you know if the company would have you start working remotely or would the start date be after spring term? Wishing you luck through the interview process!
    Sara
