Experience with Job Applications and Descriptions

The last job that I had was a construction job. I worked for a general contractor who specialized in home improvement and additions to existing homes. Throughout this job, I worked on a small team of about 3-4 people every day.

For this particular job, there was no job description. I got this job through a reference from a family friend. I had seen what the company did firsthand, which gave me an idea of what to expect. Because there was no job description, I took this position strictly due to my need for work and the pay they were offering. There are also some bonuses that come with the job, like being able to work outside in the sun, gain new knowledge, and gain experience working on a specialized team.

I had zero knowledge and skills before working this job. Everything that I know now about the home improvement process is all knowledge that I learned from being on site. I could tell that this was initially frustrating for my boss. He is a fast-paced guy and has a short temper, so there were often times when he would ask me to do something and I would have to tell him straight up that I have no idea what he is talking about. This was definitely uncomfortable at times, but I was able to show my boss through grit and determination that I could develop into a strong employee.

In hindsight, if there was a job description, I do not think that it would have changed whether or not I took the job. Like I mentioned, I was in a position where I needed work, so I was willing to try anything. I am very grateful for the experience that I had, and I would not change anything about it.
