When it comes to labor unions, theres a lot of pros for the employees, as they join the union for a reason. Employees usually join unions in order to fight for higher pay or better benefits, which is a positive thing for them. Although, in order to fight for these things, they may have to boycott going to work, and stop working in order to show the company that they are taking it seriously. This could lead the employees to losing money in the long run for loss of hours, or could potentially get them fired. It’s also a possibility that the labor union doesn’t work for them, and they end up not getting what they were fighting for. Employers also have some strong cons when it comes to labor unions, considering they have to spend time and consideration to decide whether they want to give the union what they’re asking for, or take the potential backlash. It is also hard for the company to have employees go on strike and not give any labor.
At OSU, the student teachers had a big union going to try to get a pay raise, and this lasted for months at a time. From what Iv’e heard, is that they had somewhat of a bad experience as it was dragged out for so long, and added a lot of stress to them. They also had a hard time not showing up to work and not getting a pay check. But in the end they did end up getting a raise, which made it a somewhat good experience. So my key take away is that sometimes it’s worth fighting for what you believe is right. I would totally join a union even if i had the smallest chance of getting a raise, as in the end, it may be worth it, and positively affect me in the long run.
