Week 10 Most Important Thing You’ve Learned

The most important thing that I learned in this class is how to assess someone’s personality and how to use it to my benefit when hiring that person. When learning about the different personality tests, I did one myself and learned what my personality is classified as. I ended up being a type two person. The results from the test helped me determine my strengths and weaknesses, as well as how I can improve on my weak spots. Knowing about the type of person a company wants to have is so incredibly important not only for the interviewee but the hiring team as well. The interviewee can showcase their best strengths with the type of person the business wants to hire, and the company can market a certain way depending on the type of crowd and personalities they want to attract. Each and every blog post and discussion had something to do with reading people, like with the blog post critiquing a recruitment ad. In this discussion we had to clean up and improve what we think our personal brand would be as a potential employee at a company. It showed us that confidence can make a person stand out and understanding that there are weaknesses is ok as long as you describe how you try and combat your weaknesses.

While we expect there to not be discrimination within the workplace, it is still very evident in today’s world. Hiring teams tend to unconsciously seeking specific personality traits that would work for the position they are hiring for. Interviewees can use this to their advantage though by structuring their resume to highlight the best parts of them and to show the company they have the experience to be able to qualify for the position. When resumes are too cluttered or not organized well, there are a lot of interviewers who won’t even look at the resume. can improve on my weak spots.

Week Seven IPIP Results & Reactions

When I did the personality test, my results said that I am a type two; the helper. This means that I love to help others and feel complete when others depend on me. My highest ideal is love and my main goal in life is to be selfless and giving to others. It states that my type is very emotionally deep and tend to feel a great deal, giving type twos the ability to see the whole picture. This can leave us very sensitive and vulnerable to the outside world so we compensate this by typically being an extroverted person.  Since we are always taking care of others, we will sometimes forget to take care of our own needs, and it can lead to burnout, outbursts and emotional exhaustion. It is important for me to take time to myself and reset my internal clock so be able to take care of others while taking care of myself. Type twos are people-pleasers, something that I have been working to correct in my life, which means that we will do just about anything to make sure that people like us and see us as a good person. Just like any other personality type, there are negatives just as much as there are positives, such as type two’s need to be needed. This can lead to moodiness, being bossy and in extreme and rare cases abusive.

From a potential employer’s perspective, the strengths of a type two personality is the dependability, extroversion, emotional depth, and giving. Type two’s are known to be willing to commit time to people they care about, and because of our emotional depth we get attached to others we are around a lot pretty quickly. In my line of work that I will be getting into after college, extroversion is a big component of my specific job market. I am a business management major who is interested in project management, so being able to talk to others confidently and effectively is extremely important. Since we tend to be people pleaser’s, we naturally will give and give until we collapse, meaning we will dedicate a lot of time to projects when asked. The negatives a potential employer might see is inevitable burnout, emotional volatility and exhaustion. Since type two’s give it our all, we tend to take on more work than we can handle and will burnout. If a type two does not learn about their own balances, when to take breaks and when to say no, there will be more burnouts than not. With emotional depth comes volatility if a type two is not careful. We tend to have high emotional intelligence, which means we can read people’s emotions based off of social and physical cues pretty well, but it is not always accurate or precise enough. Type twos can switch their emotions on the flip of a dime if they rely too much on other people’s opinions of them.

Week Five Typical vs. Maximal Performance

If I was a business owner, and I had to pick between Avery, who has a high-performance ceiling but struggles with consistency, or Jaime, who is known for consistency but struggles to go beyond that, I would probably choose Jaime. While Avery has potential, this position is described as essential to the company. This means that the work at this position needs to start right away and doesn’t give room for time for training on consistency and seems to not have a lot of slack regarding turn-in times.

While my pick for this position would be Jaime, there are certain job positions where I would pick Aime instead. A good example would be a job where the performance is the main point. Sales and marketing is a position where I would choose Aime, because the performance has to be top tier in order to gain customer’s trust. While Jaime would be consistent, he would struggle with showing customers that he can go above and beyond for them.

There are jobs where both interviewers are valuable, but for jobs like managers, accounting, and any position where consistency needs to be the most important part of the job I would choose Jaime. In accounting, having numbers in on time is extremely time-important because the customers need to understand their cost analysis, where the money is being consumed and whether or not there are errors in their estimates. A company could overspend on a product if they don’t get their cost analysis in time.

    Week Four-Critiquing a Recruitment Ad

When I am asked what my brand is, I would say someone who is has a bubbly personality and likes to care for others. I am a determined individual and am willing to put in the hard work. These qualities are something that I have tried improving about myself every day because they are qualities that employers are looking for in an individual. I have a weakness with technology and understanding how it works. In the past I have struggled with Microsoft apps such as Excel and Project. Despite these setbacks I have worked hard to understand how these applications work and have become attuned to technology as a whole. I would say what makes me different or unique is that I am always willing to try a different approach and understand what someone’s reasoning is for doing an action.

If I was to be in a novel or in a creative situation wanted ad I would write myself as someone who is artsy and loves to see the beauty in everything. I will sometimes just sit outside with my sketchbook and think of inventions and the life of the outside world. I find that there is a quiet angelical beauty to a quiet space. I would mention that I am a dedicated person who is a go-getter. I don’t like to wait around like a sitting duck on the chance that something happens to me. I want to experience things head on and am willing to adapt to my environment. I sometimes have a hard time letting people in and will put up a wall, but once someone gets to know me and I let them in, there is nothing I wouldn’t do for that person. I am quick to protect those who can’t defend themselves and am always willing to teach others how to stand up for themselves. I have a bite that’s bigger than my bark but try to channel that energy into my work. I have always felt connected to animals and try to surround myself with the furry critters.

    Week 3-Job Descriptions

For this week, we are asked to think about our last job we had and whether the job description influenced our decision on whether or not we would apply for the position. For my last job, and still my current one, I would say that the job description influenced my decision a great deal. I work as a teacher at an after school program where I help students learn how to improve their reading through a teaching format called SIPPS. When I heard about the job, I was told to go to the Corvallis District website. When I got there I was very impressed by how organized and detail-oriented the website was. I was able to find the position almost immediately and found an in-depth description of what the job was going to be like and how my team and I would work together.

I will say, while the Corvallis School District did a great job of giving a detailed description of what the teaching job was going to be like, I do have days that I would not have expected to happen. As a teacher, there is the baseline rules and regulations that you are given, and how you should react in certain scenarios, but children have a lot going on in the first eight hours of their school day, and when they get to us at Pages, my reading program, a lot of them are tired and dysregulated. This means that most days we are helping students regulate themselves and learn valuable life lessons on top of the reading lessons they are already doing. There are so many different family situations too and that can impact a student’s learning ability and focus a lot.

    Week 1 Job Application Experiences

When looking into the applicant’s perspective on applying for a job, there is the uncertainty when filling out the application of what the hiring personnel want. When I applied to my current job as a teacher, I tried to highlight my most critical skills that I thought pertained to the job. I also knew from experience that it is good to have specific examples on how your skill set can be portrayed and always have your resume handy. When I first submitted my application, it took them three days to get back to me. I felt that their promptness to the hiring process made the job even more endearing. The communication through email was thorough and I felt they were very clear on their expectations for the role. I was asked extremely in-depth questions about my experience working with kids and it made me feel like they actually cared about the type of person that they would be hiring for the teaching role. After I was interviewed, they gave me a realistic callback time when they would get back to me on whether or not I was to be hired. It is my understanding from the many experiences I have had in the workforce that you can tell how the company culture and job expectation is going to be based on the interview process. I have had jobs where they were lax on their communication or they asked very surface level questions and the job ended up reflecting the interview process. This job currently has been the best job I have had in a long time, and it reflects greatly from the interview process.

    Week 2- Experiences with Discrimination

The scenario describes a company that you love being under claim that it was facing a lawsuit about being discriminatory towards people with different backgrounds such as ethnicity, culture or beliefs. Would this change your opinion?

I think what I would do first is I would look into the claims, because there is millions of new articles out every day that have claims that don’t have any research or evidence to back them up. Most of the time it is about celebrities, such as when the world thought Asher and Kunis broke up, but they happen about companies too. Only after I did my own research would I decide if I would change my views. If I found the claims to be true, then it would one hundred percent change my views on that company and I would stop supporting them. I feel that my morals are very strong and that everyone has a place here on earth and for a company to make people feel less than is not somewhere I would want to work.

Week 1- The Case for Recruitment and Selection

While it is extremely important to put effort into the interview process and the hiring of new employees, there still needs to be focus on employee retention and making sure the company is getting the right kind of press. There are companies that will focus on marketing or on product design over employee recruitment and selection because they are trying to have a solid foundation for their company before adding on more people. It is important to build the backbones first before laying the groundwork. While there is reasoning why companies will do this, there are both pros and cons to this decision. The positives include having a great jumping off point for a company that will give them the opportunity to be able to do great in-depth research into the people they are hiring, and the organization’s reputation will improve from the press and bring in a lot of candidates. Some weaknesses of focusing on marketing and product design before employee recruitment could be if the company is not much bigger than a mom and pop store then they run into the possibility of an unstable work environment and make it harder to find candidates to fill employee spots. It can also lead to some resentment from the current employees if the work from marketing and everything is too much on their plates. It is a delicate balance that a manager has to decide for themselves and their organization on whether or not it will be beneficial. The manager also has to be willing to take on some of the work to help their employees not become burnt out.
