Backward Design Framework

Backward Design is a planning process to design courses based on the theoretical foundations of Understanding by Design (McTighe & Wiggins, 2005).

In this process we need to set the stage for learning. In order to do so we begin the course design process backwards; that is with the end in mind.

  1. First, we determine the desired results or learning outcomes.
  2. Then, we develop learning assessments that will help learners achieve the desired results; that is the evidence of their learning.
  3. After that, we create learning activities that will lead learners to provide that evidence of their understanding.
