Double Consciousness is defined as the racism thought process that African American’s develop based off of the dominant white culture around them. This most certainly means it is negative because usually racism is a negative thing and that can’t be good on the welfare of the African American community. When I think of the term double consciousness nothing really comes to mind because i’ve never thought about the idea of it, this is the first time i’ve heard this term so I was interested in learning what it meant. When I asked my friends what they thought about the idea of double consciousness they said they haven’t really heard of the term before but once I explained it too them they found it funny.

Not as lucid and inspired as some of your other pieces, Ian. DuBois used the term ‘double consciousness’ to mean “the sense of always looking at one’s self through the eyes of others.” This need not be unique to African-Americans, all sorts of people might have this externalized self-image, but it would be so for a minority that is singled out as separate from the rest of the culture. This idea is all about identity and individuality. I think that you should give it another look.
