Companies to Learn from: HR Management

When looking at Fortune’s 100 Best Companies to Work For, three companies stood out to me were Intuit, CarMax, and Edward Jones. My main focus was on choosing companies that I have seen here in Oregon and have also used before.

At Intuit, employees seem to have a great overall experience, as 87% recommend working there. The article highlights that employees truly feel valued within the company, with 94% feeling welcomed when they join and 91% believing the company understands when they need time off. I believe this reflects the company’s strategic HRM approach, where they prioritize employee well-being. This is likely why the majority of employees have stayed with the company for more than two years.

At CarMax, 86% of employees say it is a great place to work. This aligns with the course materials on employee development, as CarMax focuses on supporting and nurturing its employees. As a result, 89% of employees feel that management is ethical, and another 89% feel they are treated as valued members, regardless of their position.

Lastly, at Edward Jones, 89% of employees say it is a great place to work. Many employees take pride in working for the company, feeling appreciated, welcomed, and knowing they are making a meaningful contribution to their community. This is seen in the company’s employee tenure, as the majority have worked there for over six years. I believe this connects to the course materials, as Edward Jones has built a strong company culture and seeks to maintain it by hiring talent that aligns with its goals.

When thinking about the kind of manager I want to be, I envision myself as someone who fosters a supportive and comfortable environment where my team feels encouraged to grow within the company. My overall goal is to create a workplace like the companies mentioned above where employees enjoy coming to work because they see themselves as an important part of the organization. I previously had a skewed perception of HR, but throughout this class, I believe I will gain a better understanding of how effective HR management can make a significant difference.
