Water Testing: Thirty-four sites at HMSC/OSU were tested for water potability. Thirty-three passed; one site had a minor issue, which has been corrected.
EPA Safety Coordinator: Scott Turkle, EPA Western Ecology Division, joined us for this meeting. Given the frequency of his visits to Newport, we expect to see Scott at many of our monthly forums.
Chemical Pickup: Pete Schoonover will be here on Monday, September 12, to prep for the pickup, which will occur on Tuesday and Wednesday, September 13-14. At this time, EH&S is planning to make two pickups a year at HMSC. In discussion, it was noted that the PIs are closely regulating quantities and types of chemicals, therefore helping to keep us out of the “small quantity generator” category.
Tsunami Drill: The drill, on October 18, will include a full fire drill, along with the walk to Safe Haven Hill. An evening drill to Safe Haven Hill will be held for the students. (Approximately 40 students participated in the last evening drill.) The Great Oregon ShakeOut occurs on October 20th.
EH&S Lab Updates: The newly-assigned EH&S Lab Coordinator, Jenette Paul, will visit HMSC on Monday, September 19, for a familiarization tour. Jenette will pick up on the work Mike Sreniawski and Andy Kenst initiated.
Lab Coats: No update at this point. The vendor OSU selected does not service Newport; the HMSC Director and the CAS Safety Compliance Officer are working with the University to resolve this issue.
Attending: Dave Jacobson, Kathy Minta, Florence Sullivan, Bob Miller, Colleen Doyle, Mary Markland, Rachael Davis, Jim Lewis, Jody Stecher, Rick Brown, Scott Turkle, Carol Cole, Cinamon Moffett
