May 12, 2016, HMSC Safety Awareness Forum Notes

Fire Safety Checklists: Copies of both EH&S checklists (Office/Classroom and Laboratory) were distributed, with recommendations for use in self-assessments.

Alert/Safety Systems: The group discussed potential/alternate methods that could be used for office alert systems. OSU is waiting for final information from Mike Bamberger re the updated OSU system.

Survivor Advocacy Resource Center: Information about this new OSU resource was distributed in April. The Center provides free and confidential support for those community members affected by different forms of violence. http://studenthealth.oregonstate.edu/survivor-advocacy-and-resource-center

Tsunami Quest: SG Educators provided information about the upcoming test of this quest, on May 24th, by 5th graders. SG is looking for volunteers for this event, as well as testers for the quest itself.

Central Lincoln Peoples Utility District Handout: The document, containing information about earthquakes and downed power lines, was handed out to attendees.

OSHA Inspection: NOAA reported on a surprise inspection by OSHA, which took six hours. The majority of findings included: electrical cords daisy-chained, “creative” plumbing, fire exits (signage/lighting) not visible enough, partially blocked evacuation paths, unlabeled bottles, unsecured seawater tanks. Small unlabeled vials can be in a properly labeled box, and must be in that labeled box when not in use. Inspectors were thorough, looking behind doors, spotting housekeeping issues, and noting that PVC, under pressure, can burst. Issues were identified in OSU space within the NOAA building, so OSU can expect an OSHA visit to HMSC.

Training for Interns and Students: We must ensure that all incoming students and interns have the training necessary for their situation, including (as appropriate) PPE, Chemical, and/or Hood training.

June 10-12: REU and summer students will arrive.

Safe Haven Hill Cache: The soup kitchens supporting this endeavor have raisded about $1,250 thus far.

Campus Security: Individuals have been camping and sleeping in the picnic shelter, so we have increased campus patrols. If anyone notices any inappropriate camping activity, contact Facilities.

Attending: Kelly Moroney, Jim Lewis, Rick Brown, Mitch Vance, Florence Sullivan, Minda Stiles, Mary Markland, Kathy Minta, Dave Jacobson, Bob Miller, Jeff Wiseman, Carol Cole, Cinamon Moffett, David Applegate, Jody Stecher, Itchung Cheung
