March 9, 2017, HMSC Safety Awareness Forum Notes

Campus Safety/Support: Discussion included comparisons of service and open hours for both Valley and Guin Libraries, as well as unit support.

New Employee Onboarding: HMSC has developed a new web page for forms, policies, housing and other onboarding procedures, which provide a “generic” introduction to HMSC. While HMSC personnel will handle basic orientation and housing for incoming personnel, units will be responsible for all unit- and job-specific training, as well as required safety training.

OSU Alert System: Personnel continue to work out details on this system. Agency personnel will provide information to EH&S/Risk Management personnel re designated contacts.

Traffic on Campus: We were given a reminder to look left and right at stop signs.

Air Quality Issues: EH&S will provide an assessment of air quality in possibly two on-campus buildings.

Beach/Sea Safety Training: Red flares and smoke have been spotted on the beach and reported recently. In each instance, these occurred during sea safety training.   A suggestion was made that an e-mail be sent out to the community prior to setting off the flares.

Upcoming Events: Preparations for Marine Science Day, April 8th, and March for Science, April 22, were discussed.

OSHA Unannounced Visit: MOC-P received an unannounced visit from OSHA last week. Key takeaways from this visit: always have the lab ready for inspection, ensure extension cords are used appropriately (no daisy chains), appropriately label all containers, and properly dispose of waste.

Waste Pickup: This will occur mid-May. Details will follow.
