February 10, 2017, HMSC Safety Awareness Forum Notes

Freezer Clean-Out: Successful thus far, and on schedule.

MSI and Increased Student Presence: The group discussed some of the ways MSI’s grow-out might affect this campus, such as availability of informal meeting and study spaces for student groups and nighttime use of the Library. Suggestions from the group included providing personal protection/safety training to key staff members, such as identifying, avoiding and/or diffusing risk factors, responding to incidents, and reporting – what to report and when.

Water Quality Testing: This may be an ongoing topic, which should result in the establishment of a central information base.

Training: 36 people became certified (or recertified) in the recent CPR and First Aid Training. Sea Grant will host a more extensive (8 hour) class in the Spring.

Presentation on Active Shooter: Attendees indicated discussion was lively, raising questions and offering solutions.   Topics included cross-campus communication, more likely dates/times for such events, inability currently to text 911, potentials and limitations of NIXLE.

Emergency Signals:

  • Shaking indicates “earthquake.
  • Air horn blast indicates “tsunami”.
  • Fire alarm means “evacuate the building – now ”.
