April14, 2016, HMSC Safety Awareness Forum Notes

Parking Lot Striping: Facilities has completed striping on the Housing parking lot. Other areas will be completed based on need and weather.

Emergency Preparedness: Maryann Bozza, Jim Lewis, and Bob Cowen attended a recent FEMA training, based on a Texas A&M Case Study of Hurricane Katrina. Materials and presenters were excellent, and the training was well attended by regional emergency management personnel. Key issues with the Katrina response were a lack of organized communication and inadequate – officials underestimated and planned for a Category 3 hurricane; Katrina was a 5. The takeaway was to plan for the worst – which our community has done – and further strengthen local communication.

Cascadia Rising Drill: This multi-day exercise will occur in June, and there will be local participation.

Disaster Supply Cache: EPA’s soup kitchen raised $279, which was generously doubled by Dr. Cowen. We’ll need to raise $20,000 to complete the supply caches at Safe Haven Hill and the Community College. Maryann is currently looking for individuals who would help determine the best items to stock. David updated us on the storage units designed by the Senior Capstone Design Team in Bend; the final design was submitted on April 13, 2016.   The units, which will provide night lighting and blinking beacons in a major event, are estimated to cost $200,000.

Disaster Response First Aid: Tim Miller-Morgan provided information on the Disaster Response Advanced First Aid training, which takes place June 17-19. Subsidized by Oregon Sea Grant, this course is taught by the University of Colorado School of Medicine, and will host 20 participants at $95 each.

Safe Haven Hill: The city is planning a ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday, April 29th, at 3:00 p.m.

Dan Cox Presentation: There was brief discussion about the information Dan presented. One takeaway was the thought that, in the tsunami scenario, the only factor that we can control is our “milling time”. Maryann will see if his models might be available online.

Smoking Policy: HMSC’s published Policy states: “NO SMOKING AT ANY TIME IN ALL HOUSING UNITS. NO SMOKING AT ANY TIME IN ALL BUILDINGS ON THE HMSC PROPERTY.”  Per OAR Chapter 576, Division 40, OSU’s no-smoking policy covers cigars, cigarettes, pipes and electronic cigarettes.

HMSC Quick Reference Brochure & Website: We’ll distribute a limited number now, as “final review” copies. Maryann will look into how best to finance a “mass” distribution. The website is active online, currently at http://blogs.oregonstate.edu/hmscquickref/

Lab Safety Coats: It was noted that the new policy is currently in effect only in Corvallis. Satellite units will be supported at a later date.

Attending: Judy Mullen, Kelly Moroney, Rick Brown, Jody Stecher, Jeff Wiseman, David Applegate, Jim Lewis, Bob Miller, Kathy Minta, Maryann Bozza, Florence Sullivan, Colleen Doyle, Carol Cole
