Hip Hop Student Association at OSU

Hey OSU!

The Hip Hop Student Association is looking to make t-shirts this year and we need your help.  We know some of you out there have crazy ideas for t-shirts and we really want to have the best club t-shirt on campus.  So we need people to design and submit t-shirts to kyle.mannari (at) osuhhsa.com .  The designs will be voted on by the HHSA officers, and the winning design gets a $100 gift card to Karmaloop.com!  Plus, on top of the gift card, you’ll receive a free t-shirt of your design.  Our contest is over in 9 days, Februrary 24th, so design a t-shirt fast and send it my way.  For any updates check out our website at osuhhsa.com

Last weekend a few of us danced in the Beavs Helping Kids dance marathon.  The vibe there was really energetic and we were happy to help out.  Thanks for the invite BHK!  This weekend we’ll be performing in a “Cultural Affair” by ISOSU and INTOSU, and  the following weekend at Dance Against Hunger.  Find more information on where to purchase tickets on their Facebook pages or look them up on MU events.

Hey all, I finally got the review on Macklemore’s new album The Heist on the website.  Be sure and give it a quick read, I briefly talked about my favorite songs off the album.  Seattle Hip Hop is Alive and Well.  Such a dope album.  Support your artists and buy!

Also, we’ve managed to raise $100 for the club by promoting Karmaloop rep code REDBULL.  Such a feat.  All of the work was done by myself from blogging alone.  Really great opportunity to raise funds for the club.  Please take the time and share the Karmaloop page on your social accounts – Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr.  Doing so will help spread the word.  Be on the look out for contests to win giftcards to Karmaloop too!  Should be fun.

Did you guys all catch the black out game where the Beavers made history??  Well did you see the half time performance that the Hip Hop Student Association was part of??  I’m super proud of all our performers who did an amazing job to the Bruno Mars The Lazy Song.  Really exciting to see this club being part of such an event.

As soon as I receive a link to a video I’ll have the performance posted to the official HHSA webpage.  More importantly I’ll have some of the members who performed give some feedback on the process of practice, rehearsing, and performing.  Another thing I would like to bring to your attention is a new Karmaloop sale going on, where select items are 25% off.  If you do shop at Karmaloop and want to save some money, while helping raise money for the club, then check out the Karmaloop blog on our site too.  Every little bit helps, and will help us fund events in the future.

Really excited to see if we can get into more halftime shows in the future.  Thank you so much OSU’s Marching Band for giving us the opportunity!

There’s a cypher happening tonight!  Come to Dixon’s After Dark event and watch us have a quick little cypher.  Should be fun and entertaining, everyone be ready to dance.  Also, if you’re free, then come to our open practice tonight to watch and learn or practice on your own in Dixon’s multipurpose rooms from 7 – 9pm.  Then around 9:45 is when we should be prepared to cypher down in the lower courts.

Hey everyone, sorry for not posting sooner.  It’s been such a busy time moving into a new house and getting back into the groove of school.  Already, HHSA has been asked to perform in multiple events!  Down in Eugene, Oregon some of our hip hop dancers will be reppin for us, and supporting U of O’s hip hop dance club.  Also, looks for us at a football game half time show really soon!  Should be really fun and good.

Also I would like to point out the completed new layout to the website and a new streetwear blog, featuring new arrival items from Karmaloop, and offering special Karmaloop codes for discounts.  I will begin posting about new hip hop music soon, I’ve just really been focusing on the fashion blog.  Give it a look when you have a chance, I provide my honest opinion on fashion and only choose my favorite items to arrive on Karmaloop.

  Deep is an all-ages dance party and 2 on 2 all-styles battle in Portland, OR that happens on the last Saturday of every month. All-styles battles are open discipline dance-offs where krumpers, breakers, waackers, lockers, hip-hop dancers and more freestyle against one another. The DJ plays a mix of music that includes everything from hip-hop to jazz and dancers have to react on the spot to whatever is being played.

  The fifth installment of Deep will feature a solitaire battle. For solitaire, all competitors sign up on their own. We take the names, throw them in a hat and break them up into 4 groups. These massive crews will then battle one another and whichever group gets eliminated is out. We then take all the names, throw them back into the hat and break the group up into two large crews again and so on and so forth until only two dancers remain for the finals. It is again 100% crowd judged and of course, the parents battle will also be included in the line-up of events for the evening.

Macklemore’s latest song is deep and powerful. Definitely the reason I started to buy and listen to all of his music, was the fact that he rapped about ‘real’ things. He doesn’t rap about women, money, and weed in every song. Definitely give the song a listen, and be ready for his new album The Heist coming out in October.

It was hard to choose a few lines to be my favorite from the song, so here’s half of a verse.
