Update: I’ve graduated from OSU and am now working at IQ Engines. I don’t know how much longer I’ll be able to use OSU’s web space, so I’ve moved my SIFT library to GitHub: http://robwhess.github.com/opensift/. My other code and projects will most likely no longer be available unless I find some other web space, so get ‘em while you can.

I am a PhD Candidate in the Department of Computer Science at Oregon State University. My primary research interests are Computer Vision and Artificial Intelligence, and my thesis work involves designing algorithms to understand American football in video. My advisor is Alan Fern. I’m also working with Ron Metoyer on methods for visualizing the diversity of multivariate data sets and Paul Paulson on integrating Linux kernel development into the operating systems curriculum here at OSU.

In my spare time, I work with the Coalition of Graduate Employees, AFT Local 6069, which is the union that represents graduate teaching and research assistants at OSU. If I have time left over after that (which is seldom), I like brewing beer, and reading books, and appreciating baseball. I also sometimes pretend I know something about photography.

You can explore my work on this website.

My Open-Source SIFT Library just won second place at the ACM Multimedia 2010 Open-Source Software Competition. The competition was stiff, so it’s an honor for me to have my software recognized as one of the best among the many sophisticated packages it was up against. Many thanks to ACM SIGMM and to the organizers of this year’s OSSC (especially the guys from the MICC at UniFi). The competition and the MM ’10 conference as a whole were a great experience.

Update: The source code for the demo I gave during the OSSC is available here:

You need a webcam to run it. All you have to do is compile it with my SIFT library, put your own target (the thing you want to find in the webcam’s video stream) and overlay (the thing you want to replace the target in the webcam’s video stream) images at ./target.jpg and ./overlay.jpg, and execute. Press <space> to outline the detected target and ‘a’ to place the overlay image on top of it. Should run in real time if you’ve got a reasonable enough processor.

Here are some screenshots of it in action:
